Who Are You
Hello, I'm Blake, and I run Solid State Circus. SSC is my design and printing company. I make designs to be screen-printed onto t-shirts, hoodies, and other items. I do all of the screen-printing myself, by hand, in small batches in my studio in Cambridge, MA. I am a visual artist by trade, and you can see some of my other artwork on my portfolio web site or on my Facebook fan page (click on the fan box to the left).Like many of the small t-shirt design companies on the Internet, I started screen printing in college. I made my first prints in my dorm room in Senior House at MIT, where I lived my freshman through senior years. Some shirts, like the predecessor to Scutigera coleoptrata, were just for fun. I made others for students to wear at organized protests and to raise money for Steer Roast (I was Steer Roast Veep in 2000 when I made the "Sport Roast: only liability can kill you " shirts).
After graduating from MIT with a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design (a B-SAD), I went on to become a robotics engineer at Boston Dynamics. I helped design and build the first three and a half generations of the BigDog robot. Having proved my chops as an engineer, I checked "build cool robots" off my life's to-do list and left Boston Dynamics to devote myself to the arts in 2008.
When you buy something from Solid State Circus, you are supporting me, an artist, and helping me to create more art and more awesome t-shirt designs. Your $$$ keeps me protected from the elements and puts some food in my belly. For that, I very sincerely thank you.
